What is Shaken Baby Syndrome?

Shaken Baby Syndrome is the name given to the many serious, and sometimes fatal, injuries and permanent disabilities that can occur when an infant is violently shaken.

Why does the shaking occur?

The number one reason given for shaking a child is "I just wanted the baby to stop crying." Shaking often occurs when parents, babysitters or other caregivers become frustrated and lose control. Most people are unaware of the dangers of shaking a child.

How serious is SBS?

There are an estimated 1,000 to 3,000 cases of SBS each year in the U S. One shaken baby in four dies as a result of his or her injuries.
Between October 1996 and December 1997, 42 babies in New York State were hospitalized forSBS. More than two thirds of the SBS victims in New York State were boys with an average age of six months.

Who shakes babies?

The vast majority of abusers are men in their early twenties. The abuser is usually the baby's father or the mother's boyfriend.

What happens when a child is shaken?

Violent shaking can result in:

You can prevent SBS by taking these simple steps:
- Never, ever shake a baby.
- Make sure that everyone who cares for your child knows about the dangers of shaking.
- Always support the baby's head and neck when holding him or her.

Do you know or suspect that your child has been shaken?

Take the baby to the emergency room right away, even if you feel guilty or embarrassed. Immediate medical attention can protect your child from future problems, and may even save his or her life.

What can I do if my baby won't stop crying?

All babies cry a lot during the first few months of life. Crying is your baby's way of communicating with you. Crying does not mean that your baby is being bad or that your baby is angry with you.
To calm a crying baby:
- Check to see if the baby needs changing, is hungry, or is too hot or too cold.
- Feed slowly and burp often.
- Rock the baby.
- Give the baby a pacifier or let the baby nurse.

If nothing seems to work:
